To supplement this we have today launched our Outreach and Public Engagement Roadmap. This is a document which outlines possible interventions with young people of different ages, and how this can be targeted and supported by work within the same broader community.  The roadmap lays out the programmes we run, their target audiences and age groups, the ideal location to run each activity, and provides supplementary information about the aims of each one. The roadmap lays out how OutreachRead More...

Why do physics? How do we do physics? Over the last few years we have been working together with teachers and students across the region to develop a set of workshops which look at the wider picture of physics within the context on a student’s life and career paths. Teachers who took part in our evaluation said said that these workshops help do just that: “The idea that they can see science isn’t just in a school environment that it’s out there everywhere, that people areRead More...

The Dark Energy of Quantum Materials – Thursday 14 June – Royal Holloway, Egham https://www.sepnet.ac.uk/the-dark-energy-of-quantum-materials-thursday-14-june-royal-holloway-university-of-london-e/ Thu, 07 Jun 2018 15:33:38 +0000 http://www.sepnet.ac.uk/?p=4062 Limited Places Left! For more information and to register for free sign up here.  Superconductors are fascinating quantum materials with applications that include the lossless transmission of electrical power, levitating trains, making huge magnetic fields, and detecting the tiniest magnetic fields. Conventional superconductors were discovered in 1911 but the theoretical explanation did not come until 1957. High temperature superconductivity, discovered in 1986, is unconventional and we still don’t have a theory that explains it. There are dozens of other types of unconventional superconductors that we cannot explain. In this lecture, Professor Greene will explore superconductivity and the bizarre behaviours of some quantum materials, and show some of the transformative applications. She willRead More...

Launch of Interact 2017 Evaluation Report https://www.sepnet.ac.uk/launch-interact-2017-evaluation-report/ Mon, 19 Mar 2018 14:57:33 +0000 http://www.sepnet.ac.uk/?p=3900 SEPnet, together with STFC, Institute of Physics and the University of Birmingham are proud to launch the evaluation report from Interact 2017. Interact 2017 was a symposium whose aim was to cultivate a community of engagement practitioners within the physical sciences who develop high quality STEM engagement and encourage a culture of strategic and reflective practice. The symposium was a success with over 120 physical scientists from across the UK attending and sharing best practice. The symposium is also measuring its impact on these scientists through a yearlong evaluation process, the baseline of which can be found in the report. In addition to this, the report showcases the rich landscapeRead More...

This was the first SEPnet-wide project which involved building a direct partnership with a set of schools to deliver a programme of activity over an academic year. The pilot was a first step, so the priority for the evaluation was on logistics over impact of the project, though both were considered. The evaluation was carried out by Elizabeth Jeavans and Sarah Jenkins. The full report can be found here. Overall the project delivered a programme whichRead More...
